Hungarian National Card offers easy EU residency

Hungarian and Serbian residency

The greatest advantage of Hungarian residency compared to residency in Serbia is that Hungary is a member of the EU. As a result, a Hungarian residence permit gives you visa free access to the Schengen zone. Serbia is currently only a candidate for EU membership, and as such, its citizens can travel visa-free in Europe, while residents still need to apply for a visa.

Similar to Serbian residency, Hungarian residency is available to all nationals who are planning to study, work, or set up a business in Hungary. Both countries offer family unification and, after some time, permanent residency and eventually citizenship. However, in Hungary these options are not available with every type of residency. Luckily, the National Card does offer these benefits.

Who can apply for the Hungarian National Card?

The Hungarian National Card is available only to nationals of certain countries. The list has just been extended, so starting form 9 July 2024, citizens of the following countries are eligible:

• Belarus
• Bosnia and Herzegovina
• Moldova
• Montenegro
• North Macedonia
• Russia
• Serbia
• Ukraine

You can apply for the Hungarian National Card if you intend to start a job or set up a business in Hungary (this can be a new business or a subsidiary of your existing Serbian or other company). You do not need any special or high qualifications, but you need to be qualified for the work you intend to perform in Hungary.

Apply in Serbia

If you are

• a national of one of the above countries,
• already a resident of Serbia,
• and you intend to expand your activities to Hungary,

the Hungarian Card is an excellent option for you. As a Serbian resident, you can apply directly in Serbia, without traveling back to your home country.

Benefits of the National Card of Hungary

Holders of the National Card of Hungary can operate a business of their own or enter employment in Hungary, while taking advantage of the following benefits:

• Family unification: you can get Hungarian residency and a Schengen visa for your spouse and all your underage children
• Option for permanent residency after spending most of your time for at least 3 years in Hungary
• Option for status change: if you want to apply for another type of residency, you can do that from within Hungary, without traveling back to your home country.
